Domain Name Registrar
What is a Domain Name Registrar?  Just as the postman knows where your mailbox is, the Domain Name Registrar maintains the records of who owns which domain name and where it is hosted. That information lets anyone find your web site by typing the name into a browser. The browser then reads the information from the registrar's system and guides the user to the Domain Name Server (DNS) that hosts your web site.

Until recently, the central database for USA-based domains was controlled by a monopoly known as Network Solutions (some call it "Internic" and as of few months ago they have a new name, "Verisign").

That monopoly has been broken. Now there is competition. That has brought improved services and lower prices to those who choose the new, more responsive registrars.

Why would I change
Why would I change registrars?   As we said, competition has brought improved services and lower prices. If you have ever tried to move your web site from one hosting company to another (called a DNS transfer), you have probably seen the complex, nerd-centric procedure that involves mind-boggling forms, email and faxes that Network Solutions (Verisign) still uses.

A Verisign transfer involves exchanging long, complicated email forms that are virtually illegible because of their computer jargon and must be filled out exactly one way. Even a single typo or key stroke in the wrong place and their computer keeps bouncing back the same form, over and over, a new copy appended to the earlier ones until your head is spinning.

What does it cost
What does it cost to change registrars?  A one time fee of $19.95. And, you get additional free time.

For example, let's say your current annual registration still has 3, 5, or even 11 months to go before renewal. Transfer to us and your term is automatically extended by the amount of your open balance, plus one additional year, free of charge.

So, if you have 8 months to go on your current registration, transfer to our Registrar and your registration is paid through for the next 20 months (8 + 12).

But price alone is not the reason to transfer.

Keep in mind that you are registered on the exact same database, controlled by the exact same international agencies, but we have made the process of managing your domain registration much, much simpler. It takes less than 2 minutes using the Domain Manager on our web site to change your address, move from one hosting company to another, appoint different individuals to manage your technical support or handle your billing.

The process is simple. A few clicks and you are done. Equally important, the new registration system is just as secure as any other registrar's service.
